Piskel is a great, easy to use and free software that allows anyone to create pixel art and animations. You can download their software for Windows, Mac & Linix or even just use a brower and create art without having to download anything. The software gives you everything you need to create basic pixel art and you can export them as gif's or even spritesheets.
